Assignment #6 (86-102): Explore and explain the significance of the scene in the Butt Room.
The significance of the Butt Room is that this is where Gene tells the group of people in the room that he had shaken Finny off of the tree. The room is described as a "dungeon" and is an indication that bad things happen in the room. "The Butt Room was something like a dungeon... The school's policy, in order to discourage smoking, was to make these rooms as depressing as possible" (Knowles 88). Gene finds himself being harassed and hurt by a unsavory cult, of which Brinker is the leader of. Brinker accuses Gene of "killing" his roommate and by doing this getting his dorm room all to himself. Gene makes up small lies at the start of his interrogation to avoid admitting himself to the crime, but the student group does not believe it. Gene eventually gets desperate to leave the room and makes up a huge lie about the relationship between him and Finny, but does include the fact that he had pushed Finny off of the tree. Satisfied with the answer the group lets him leave. The significance of the scene is to show how the truth comes out on way or the other, and that the truth of how Finny got hurt is no longer a secret between Gene and Finny anymore.

The Butt Room was supposed to show a differentiating location that is less innocent and more ruthless. “Everyone at Devon had many public faces; in class we looked, if not exactly scholarly, at least respectably alert; on the playing fields we looked like innocent extroverts; and in the Butt Room we looked, very strongly, like criminals” (Knowles 88). This room is a completely contrasting view of the Devon school than how it was originally described by Gene. Gene first talked about life at the school as being “still very close to the way of peace” (Knowles 92); however, in the Butt Room, Gene was fiercely attacked and ganged up against by the other Devon students. In this room, the students have a chance to let their cruel side out without fear of being punished.

ReplyDeleteGoing against what Irfan believes happened in this scene, I think that Gene was able to tactfully extract himself from a situation where if it had gone any further, could have become potentially dangerous. Gene realizes this early one, when Brinker accuses him of "getting rid" of Finny so Gene could have the room all to himself. After heading down to the Butt Room, Brinker introduces Gene as a prisoner, and that's when Gene realizes he must get out of there. "I had to take part in this, or risk losing complete control," is what Gene thought, and so he went along and told an extravagant story which in turn made fun of the fact that people would even think that Gene had ever tried to push Finny of the branch (Knowles 89). After making a joke out of it, Gene was able to leave without a scratch.
ReplyDeleteWhen Gene went to the butt room, he confessed all of the information in a joking manner. Like hiding in plain sight, he said all of his information, and because of the extremes that Gene described, they couldn’t believe him when he said, “all I did was drop a little bit.. a little pinch of arsenic in his morning coffee.” (Knowles 89). This may have been made subconsciously by gene or deliberate, either way, he got out of the butt room, and back to studying French.
